NEIGHBOURHOOD PARKS

DPZ and Whittaker Homes retained Corban and Goode to develop an open space plan and design parks for the New Town at St. Charles, a planned community west of St. Louis. The town consists of six mixed-use walkable neighborhoods defined by a network of canals, lakes and parks; a notable selection of which are described below.

Granger Landing is a gateway park along waterways that includes landscape treatment of the adjacent boulevard, bridge overlook and belvedere. A recessed lawn serves as a casual playing field and venue for assembly; the shoreline is a promenade and canal-side quay, accommodating small boat mooring; and a raised hill provides views over the adjacent lake to the Grand Canal.

Existing pipeline easements crossing the Town site were transformed into a network of Pipeline Parks. The designs respond to requirements to minimize encroachment to transmission pipes and maintain clear visibility for fly-over inspections. Modest re-grading and native grass planting introduced along easement edges create beautiful wide ecological corridors that run through neighbourhoods and host light recreational programming.

Hempstead Street Park is located next to the Community Farm and merges with the surrounding landscaped streets. Graded landforms accommodate casual seating and picnicking under shade trees, and a playhouse stages presentations and performances associated with farm events.
