COMMUNITY FARM
DPZ retained Corban and Goode to design the parks and develop the open space plan for the New Town at St. Charles, a planned community west of St. Louis. The town is defined by a network of canals, lakes and associated parks and consists of six mixed-use compact and walkable neighborhoods.
Paying homage to the agrarian heritage of St. Charles County, the community farm in New Town was created to help connect people to their food and environment and be a hub of community life.
Corban and Goode’s farm plan centers on a renovated existing barn, and provides space for green houses, farm sheds, market building, livestock pens, production fields, irrigation ponds and wind powered mills to pump groundwater. The spacious farm house is inhabited by an urban farming family who manage the livestock, greenhouse and fields and sell fresh seasonal products and eggs all year round. The plan also includes allotment garden plots, popular with residents, and a public gathering space that hosts well-attended regional events celebrating local food and music.
