DUNDAS WEST STREETSCAPE STUDY

Toronto, Canada

A streetscape study and implementation plan was commissioned to create a high quality design treatment for the public realm along a diverse section of Dundas Street West in downtown Toronto. The plan sets out a vision for a Creative Corridor that ties together diverse communities, land uses, scale, character and buildings to improve pedestrian walking experience without losing the variety and richness of individual neighborhoods along the way.
The design and process were profoundly informed by public and stakeholder consultation.

Streetscape interventions along Dundas Street West extend from University Ave. to Bathurst St. and include: intersection with the University Avenue subway line; Toronto Police 52 Division headquarters and plaza; the AGO, Grange and OCAD precinct; Beverley heritage district; Chinatown BIA, South Kensington Market shops; Alexandra Park social housing and Scadding Court Community Centre; public library and Toronto Western Hospital precinct.

The proposed streetscape redevelopment improves sidewalk conditions, provides engaging spaces to spark activity and encounter, increases planting, street tree, seating and site furnishings layout options, establishes linkages with parks and urban open space, and coordinates pedestrian, cycling and vehicular movement.
