CIVIC PLANT LIST and STREETSCAPE PLANTING

DPZ commissioned Corban and Goode to design the parks and develop the open space plan for the New Town at St. Charles, a planned community west of St. Louis. The town is defined by a network of canals and parks, and consists of six mixed-use walkable neighborhoods connected by local streets with enhanced streetscape treatment.

As part of this and companion to the New Town Urban Code, a Civic Plant List was researched and compiled to guide the selection of street, parkland and open space plantings to create a sustainable urban forest for the town. The comprehensive guide features primarily native plant species with proven local performance ability. A range of deciduous and evergreen shade trees and plant types for oak savanna, riparian and aquatic ecosystems were selected with horticultural characteristics listed for each.

Appropriate selection of tree species provides distinct structure, character and scale to each street and neighbourhood, while promoting horticultural diversity and maximizing tree canopy coverage. Signature tree species of notable character are used to distinguish significant avenues and streets and compliment comprehensive urban forest and shoreline plantings.
