CANADA LIFE / UNIVERSITY AVE. CONNECTION

Toronto, ON

Based on a Master Plan developed by Urban Strategies Inc., Corban Landscape Architects Ltd articulated a comprehensive Open Space Plan and Guideline Document to determine the structure, character and elements to guide the redevelopment of the Canada Life Head Office block property. The plan sets out a vision for a campus environment that establishes pedestrian connections through the block.

The site centers around three key public spaces one of which, a pedestrian walkway adjacent to historic Campbell House, the landscape Architects were retained to design.

Design of the walkway takes inspiration from the Beaux-Arts style of the historic Canada Life Building. The granite-paved walkway, flanked by lush plantings, provides access to the historic Campbell House and connects the interior of the office campus to University Avenue and the subway. The pedestrian connection celebrates one of the most historically revealing and significant view corridors in downtown Toronto.  The alignment presents layers of civic history with the tall 1910 South African War Memorial on University Avenue profiled against the historic Osgoode Hall and park, Nathan Philips Square, Romanesque clock tower of old City Hall and terminating with the contemporary Eaton Centre.
